William Boyd Solo

James Bond book by William Boyd "SOLO"  Publiceras av EA förlag Sverige

Many thanks to Vintage Books for the  review book "SOLO" from  James Bond Museum Sweden Nybro

New Bond Book by William Boyd   http://www.007museum.com/solo.htm

A surprise in today's press release announcing the title of William Boyd's new James Bond novel, Solo, was the additional news of the major locations featured in the book: Africa and the USA.

Funnily enough, it was exactly a year ago that The Spectator suggested that Boyd's Bond could be set in Africa based on comments the author made at the Oxford Literary Festival that year. Looks like the first rumor out of the box proved to be true. (Funny how often that happens.)

This is actually 007's second trip to Africa in a row. A large part of Jeffery Deaver's Carte Blanche was set in South Africa. Of course, Carte Blanche was a contemporary adventure while Boyd's novel is set in 1969, so I expect we will be visiting a very different Africa in Solo.

However, I'm even more excited by the news that 007 will be traveling to the USA in Solo. Can you believe that the literary James Bond has not set foot in the U.S. since Raymond Benson's The Facts of Death in 1998? In that book Bond traveled to Texas. Exactly where Boyd is taking Bond in the American portion of his book is not yet known. The last time Bond visited America in the classic Fleming timeline was The Spy Who Loved Me (1962).

At today's London Book Fair unveiling, Boyd said, "He goes on a real mission to real countries and the world he's in is absolutely 1969. There are no gimmicks, it's a real spy story. . . there is a very precise reason why I chose that year."

Hmmm....

William Boyd announces title of new Bond book
at The London Book Fair

William Boyd, whose James Bond continuation novel is set to be one of this year’s publishing highlights, has today announced that his book will be called Solo
The announcement came on the opening day of The London Book Fair, where Boyd is Author of the Day.
He explained his choice of title:
‘Sometimes less is more. For me as a novelist the simple beauty of Solo as the title of the next James Bond novel is that this short four-letter word is particularly and strikingly apt for the novel I have written. In my novel, events conspire to make Bond go off on a self-appointed mission of his own, unannounced and without any authorization - and he’s fully prepared to take the consequences of his audacity.
‘The journey Bond goes on takes in three continents – with the main focus honing in on Africa. It’s what happens to Bond in Africa that generates his urge to “go solo” and take matters into his own hands in the USA.
‘Thus far and no further, at this stage…’
He continues: ‘Titles are very important to me and as soon as I wrote down Solo on a sheet of paper I saw its potential. Not only did it fit the theme of the novel perfectly, it’s also a great punchy word, instantly and internationally comprehensible, graphically alluring and, as an extra bonus, it’s strangely Bondian in the sense that we might be subliminally aware of the “00” of “007” lurking just behind those juxtaposed O’s of SOLO…’
Very little else has been revealed about the book at this stage, other than that it will feature a veteran secret agent, with Bond aged 45. It will be published on 26 September in the UK by Fleming’s original publisher, Jonathan Cape, an imprint of Vintage Publishing, part of The Random House Group, in hardback, ebook and audio editions. HarperCollins will publish the book in Canada and the U.S. on 8 October.
Quote from Corinne Turner, Managing Director of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd:
‘Ian Fleming had a great aptitude for naming his books and his Bond titles have become true classics. Solo is a simple yet striking title which fits perfectly alongside the other books in the Bond canon. The announcement of the title marks the lead up to the launch of William Boyd’s novel in September, which we and the Fleming family are looking forward to immensely.’
Quote from Richard Cable, Managing Director, Vintage:
‘We are delighted to be announcing Solo as the title for the new James Bond novel on the day on which William Boyd is celebrated as Author of the Day at London Book Fair. The few of us with the good fortune to have read Solo can testify that Will has written an absolutely brilliant book and we look forward with mounting excitement to a huge worldwide publishing event on September 26th. The timing of the announcement is particularly apt as we mark the 60th anniversary of Jonathan Cape’s first publication of Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale.’

Solo... I think I love it. Not an obvious Bond title, but still very Bondian. Elegant, but also tough. And I love one word titles. We haven't had a one word title on an adult Bond novel since Doubleshot in 2000.

Solo will be released by Jonathan Cape in the UK on September 26, 2013 (Amazon.co.uk) and by HarperCollins in the U.S. on October 8, 2013 (Amazon.com).

Now that the excitement surrounding Skyfall and the James Bond film franchise’s 50th anniversary has faded, we can look forward to the next event on 007’s agenda—a return to literary missions in William Boyd’s upcoming novel, Solo. On Monday, the British novelist and screenwriter revealed that in the next Bond installment, the dapper 45-year-old spy will go rogue.

Speaking at the London Book Fair, Boyd explained, “In my novel, events conspire to make Bond go off on a self-appointed mission of his own, unannounced and without any authori[z]ation—and he’s fully prepared to take the consequences of his audacity. . . He goes on a real mission to real countries and the world he’s in is absolutely 1969. There are no gimmicks, it’s a real spy story. . . there is a very precise reason why I chose that year."

As far as settings, Boyd added that the British secret agent will be exploring at least additional two continents: “It’s what happens to Bond in Africa that generates his urge to ‘go solo’ and take matters into his own hands in the USA.”

Solo will be published on September 26 in the U.K. by Jonathan Cape, the original publisher of Bond creator Ian Fleming. The last Bond book, Carte Blanche by Jeffery Deaver, was published in 2011, the same year that Fleming’s estate enlisted Boyd to continue the series.

In other upcoming Bond news, 007’s studio, MGM, reported last month that it is planning a follow-up to Skyfall “within the next three years.”

William Boyd takes James Bond back to 1969 in new 007 novel

Booker-nominated author William Boyd is taking on the mission to write a new James Bond novel.

The as-yet-untitled book will appear in 2013, the 60th anniversary of the super-spy's first literary outing, in Ian Fleming's Casino Royale.

Boyd has revealed that his story will mark a return to "classic Bond" and will be set in the late 1960s.

He is the third author in recent years to be invited by the Ian Fleming estate to write an official Bond novel.

Before him came American thriller writer Jeffery Deaver, who penned Carte Blanche in 2011; and Sebastian Faulks, whose Devil May Care was published to mark Ian Fleming's centenary in 2008.
James Bond book, Carte Blanche, by Jeffery Deaver
Author Jeffrey Deaver is penning a new book in the James Bond series and is reuniting the world's most famous spy with one of Britain's most prestigious marques, Bentley. To celebrate this Bentley created a limited luxury edition ($1,650 - Edition of 500) that houses the book in a polished metal case that echoes the shape and contours of the new Continental GT. The book also gets a makeover in white nappa leather and inside the ivory pages hides a polished 9mm bullet that is signed with the book's serial number. "Devil May Care", Sebastian Faulks writing as Ian Fleming, Limited edition (500) signed by the author, published by Michael Joseph in association with Waterstones, May 2008.

Deaver's book, released in May last year, is set in the present day and portrayed Bond as a Royal Naval Reserve veteran whose service included a tour of Afghanistan. It has sold over 160,000 copies to date and is out in paperback next month.

Sales of Carte Blanche in its opening week were about a third of those achieved by Faulks' book in the same period.

Other writers to take on Fleming's hero include John Gardner and Charlie Higson, author of the Young Bond books.

'Fascination' Boyd said he had "accepted at once" when invited by the Ian Fleming estate to write the new Bond novel.

"For me the prospect appeared incredibly exciting and stimulating - a once-in-a-lifetime challenge," he said.

"In fact my father introduced me to the James Bond novels in the 1960s and I read them all then - From Russia with Love being my favourite."

Boyd's novels include A Good Man in Africa (1981), which won the Whitbread First Novel Award; An Ice-Cream War (1982), shortlisted for Booker Prize; Brazzaville Beach (1990); Any Human Heart and Restless (2006).

Boyd's "fascination" with Ian Fleming was previously seen in Any Human Heart (2002). He wrote Fleming into the narrative, making him responsible for recruiting the protagonist, Logan Mountstuart, to the Naval Intelligence Division in World War II.

Boyd also points out that three of his screenplays have starred big-screen Bond actors: Sean Connery in A Good Man in Africa, Pierce Brosnan in Mr Johnson and Daniel Craig in The Trench.

"The idea that these somewhat random connections with Fleming and Bond should culminate in my writing a new James Bond novel is irresistibly appealing," Boyd said.

"The only thing I'm prepared to say at this stage about the novel that I will write is that it will be set in 1969."

His most recent novel, Waiting for Sunrise, was published in the UK in February and comes out in the US later this month.

"William Boyd is a contemporary English writer whose classic novels combine literary elements with a broad appeal," said Corinne Turner, managing Director of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd.

"His thrillers occupy the niche that Ian Fleming would fill were he writing today and with similar style and flair. This, alongside his fascination with Fleming himself, makes him the perfect choice to take Bond back to his 1960s world."

The new Bond novel will be published in the UK and Commonwealth in autumn 2013 by Jonathan Cape - Ian Fleming's original publisher - and simultaneously by HarperCollins Publishers in USA and Canada.

Cape was also the publisher of the first ever official Bond novel following Fleming's death in 1964, when Kingsley Amis wrote Colonel Sun as Robert Markham in 1968.Sir Kingsley William Amis
CBE (16 April 1922 – 22 October 1995) was an English novelist, poet, critic and teacher. He wrote more than twenty novels, three collections of poetry, short stories, radio and television scripts, and books of social and literary criticism. According to his biographer, Zachary Leader, Amis was 'the finest British comic novelist of the second half of the twentieth century'. He is the father of the English novelist Martin

Fleming's first Bond novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1953. Since then, the Bond books have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

Sales are likely to be boosted by the release, in October, of Daniel Craig's third 007 film Skyfall, which comes 50 years after the original Bond film, Dr No.

It is 1969 and James Bond is about to go solo, recklessly motivated by revenge.

A seasoned veteran of the service, 007 is sent to single-handedly stop a civil war in a small West African nation. Aided by a beautiful accomplice and hindered by the local militia, he undergoes a scarring experience which compels him to ignore M's orders in pursuit of his own brand of justice.

Bond's renegade action leads him to Washington DC, where he discovers a web of geopolitical intrigue and witnesses fresh horrors.

Even if Bond succeeds in exacting his revenge, a man with two faces will come to stalk his every waking moment.
