Jamaica airport Boscobel Aerodrome to be renamed in honour of Ian Fleming ...Jamaica opens third international airport named after Ian Fleming... Minister Bruce Golding yesterday officially opened the island's third international airport at Boscobel in St Mary. Named in honour of late British author and journalist Ian Fleming, who created James Bond, the Ian Fleming International Airport will primarily handle private jets with specialised service for scheduled charters. The former Boscobel Aerodrome has been significantly upgraded and boasts, among other things, a completely resurfaced and extended runway. It is expected to cater to the needs of high-end tourists and the general aviation market. Several government officials, representatives from the tourism sector, including chairman of Sandals Resorts Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, hotelier and former music mogul Chris Blackwell as well as members of the Fleming family were present to witness the opening. Here, Ian Fleming's niece Lucy Fleming and Prime Minister Bruce Golding unveil the plaque at the Ian Fleming International Airport yesterday. At right is Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry.
Jamaica is set to open its third international airport on January 12. Formerly known as the Boscobel Airstrip, the new Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) has been overhauled and expanded to accommodate private international aircraft, as well as small domestic planes. The airport is located just 10 minutes from the famed GoldenEye Hotel & Resort in Oracabessa, and tourism officials hope that the airport with offer jet-setters quick and easy access to resorts on the North Coast. It will become the island’s main port of entry for private jets entering Jamaica and may in the future support domestic shuttle service to other parts of the island. The airport is named for author Ian Fleming, who penned all 14 James Bond novels in his home at GoldenEye and played host to the international glitterati of the 50s and 60s. The airport’s opening will be officiated by the island’s Prime Minister Bruce Golding and will be attended by current GoldenEye owner and founder of Island Records, Chris Blackwell.

Books by Ian Fleming: När Ian Fleming skulle
Bonds viktigaste verk, som fortfarande kommer ut i nya upplagor, heter "Birds of the West Indies. An account with full descriptions of all the birds known to occur or to have occurred on the West Indian Islands" (1936). 1933 framförde James Bond teorin att de flesta västindiska fåglarna genetiskt tillhörde norra Amerika, utom de på Trinidad och Tobago. En David Lack slog 40 år senare fast denna teori i boken "Island biology", och myntade där uttrycket Bond´s Line för gränsen mellan Trinidad, Tobago och området norr därom. James Bond avled
1989. Han blev 90 år gammal. |

Jamaica opens new airport named for Ian Fleming
Fleming first visited Jamaica in 1942, when he was an intelligence agent in Bermuda. Ian Fleming International Airport is close to the scenic retreat where the late author reportedly wrote all 14 of his books about the elegant, crafty spy. The property is now an exclusive resort owned by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, who is credited with introducing reggae great Bob Marley’s music to the world. The small airport, formerly called the Boscobel Aerodrome, features a terminal with customs and immigration sections to accommodate global travelers. Officials said the facility just outside the coastal town of Orcabessa is the Caribbean island’s third international airport. The 007 author’s niece, Lucy Fleming, who traveled from her Oxfordshire home in southwestern England to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony, said her uncle would have been thrilled to see an airport emblazoned with his name in the Jamaican parish of St. Mary. “He adored Jamaica and found so much inspiration and relaxation here. So I tell you something, to have this accolade of having an airport named after him here I know would have been a great honor for him,” Fleming said. “Honestly, I don’t think he would have written those (Bond) books without Jamaica.” Fleming first visited Jamaica in 1942, when he was an intelligence agent in Bermuda. He returned and bought a property he dubbed GoldenEye four years later _ in the dying days of the British Empire, when the north shore of Jamaica teemed with scions of wealthy British families and American celebrities like Errol Flynn. It was at GoldenEye where Fleming sat down at his desk to write “Casino Royale,” launching the phenomenally successful series that is still going strong. He named his dashing spy after an unassuming U.S. ornithologist who wrote “Birds of the West Indies.” Fleming died in 1964. Several 007 movies including “Live and Let Die” and “Dr. No” were filmed near Fleming’s Jamaica estate, and it shares a name with the 1995 Bond film “GoldenEye.” Music industry mogul Blackwell, who also attended the opening, said the airport will be a boon not only for his nearby GoldenEye resort, but also for the nearby tourist mecca of Ochio Rios and the northeastern town of Port Antonio. “It’s very well set up,” said Blackwell, whose GoldenEye retreat is the flagship resort of his Island Outpost company, which has a collection of hotels and villas in Jamaica and the Bahamas.

Jamaica opens new airport named for Ian Fleming.
Fleming first visited Jamaica in 1942, when he was an intelligence agent in Bermuda.
The airport, with single 1,500m (5,000ft) runway, had been in operation for 30 years before a renovations began in 2009. The facility has been open unofficially since May, hosting singer Jimmy Buffet as its first international arrival. In December, a new private turf runway general aviation airport, exclusively for the use of guests at the Jakes hotel, opened for business as well. Jamaica's minister for information, telecommunications and special projects, Daryl Vaz, says the new name "will significantly enhance the marketing of the airport and the area to the international aviation community and, therefore should prove to be a 'value-added' asset." |
